Administrative / biographical background: |
The Friendly Society known as the Independent Order of Rechabites was founded on strict principles of total abstention in Salford on 25 Aug. 1835. The name was derived from the Rechabites spoken of in the prophecy of Jeremiah "who drink no wine" and, as they dwelt in "Tents", the local branches of the order were designated by that name. The "Hope of Tarvin" Tent no.1288 was opened in 1879 in the Winsford and Norley District No.19 and met in the Public Hall in Tarvin. |
